The Spark That Started the Investigation
In early 2018, a journalist at The Hollywood Reporter received an unusual tip: a string of aspiring actors and screenwriters had been defrauded by someone pretending to be a powerful female executive. The victims described elaborate phone calls and promises of mentorship that turned into financial requests for flights, visas, and other expenses. The reporter, Josh Dean, began connecting the dots and soon realized this wasn't a handful of isolated incidents. It was a sprawling, international operation.
Dean teamed up with Campside Media to launch the Chameleon podcast. The goal was not just to tell the victims' stories but to actively investigate the con artist. The team assembled a global network of sources, from private investigators to former intelligence officers, to track the perpetrator. The initial spark came from a single, persistent query: who was behind the voice that had fooled so many?
